HISTORY

The Limmat Foundation was founded on the 13th of March 1972 in Zurich (Switzerland) and is the oldest umbrella foundation in Switzerland. As an independent, non-profit and internationally active foundation, it is under supervision of the federal Swiss Federal Department of Internal Affairs. The Limmat Foundation is tax-exempt and politically, religiously as well as ethnically unaffiliated.

The Foundation is established on the 13th of March and recognized as a non-profit organization
1975

First major projects initiated in developing countries (Nigeria, Philippines)

1983

Establishment of the “Aurora” sub-foundation for educational projects in Italy

1985-86

Co-financing of development projects in Peru and Kenya in cooperation with the Government of Belgium

1989

Executive Director Antonio Zweifel, who was a member of Opus Dei, dies of leukemia at the age of 51.

1991

Scholarship campaign for 700 girls in developing countries ran on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation.

1993

Establishment of the of the “Karl Lukas Honegger Patronage”

1995

Establishment of the sub-foundation for street children and the “Jepa-Limmat” sub-foundation, among aothers, for research in developing countries.

1996

Establishment of the “Esmeralda” sub-foundation for social projects in Greece and in developing countries

2000

Establishment of the “Tamaro” sub-foundation for women and children in need

2005

Organization of the Swiss benefit tour of the Bosconia Youth Orchestra, an orchestra made up of former street children from Colombia

2011

First “Saberes” project initiated in Colombia (training of ‘day mothers’)

2013

Elisabeth András elected President of the Foundation, to replace Dr. Hans Thomas.

François Geinoz (Managing Director of the Limmat Foundation) elected as President of proFonds (umbrella organization of charitable foundations in Switzerland)

2014

Inauguration of Hospital Monkole in Kinshasa, Congo

2015

Vocational training project established in war-torn Aleppo, Syria 

2016

Support of the “Kamalini” training centre in India

2017

“Dime” project in Medellín: Training and coaching for female entrepreneurs

2018

Support for a Christian primary school in Ukraine

Dual training project launched in Nairobi, Kenya

2019

Support of the Don Bosco project for the reintegration of ex-child soldiers

2020

25. Esmeralda Charity Cup: Since 1996, the generosity of countless golfers has raised over three Mio. Swiss francs for 50 (street) children projects.

Establishment of the “Scoluniv” sub-foundation for projects in Madagascar
